Cheated

Hello, new year!  No, I am not making any resolutions.  However, I have been doing a lot of thinking, which has been both productive and brooding, about who I am and how I got here.  My Pinterest site is where I am most active, and the boards that get the most attention are Girls in a Hostile World and Nesting, so I guess that is what I am thinking about most.

Misogyny has been a life-long conundrum, beginning with my dissatisfaction with my church, that women are not allowed to teach men (even if they are boys that have been baptized) in any forum– not allowed to teach, to pray aloud, to even pass the tray or do announcements.  More and more I feel that this is misguided, and a tremendous disservice to the entire church.  Would we not benefit from the spiritual, godly women among us preaching about their faith?  Would we not grow from hearing the holy word of God in earnest prayer from women who have lived and struggled with their own lives?

Because of this ruling, the church is cheated out of hearing the perspective of women on God, and women are cheated out of being heard… and this is wrong.  The patriarchy continues unchallenged and we sit in silence, denied the chance to speak in public.

In Romans 16, Paul makes a list of people who he was deeply grateful to, and to those who helped him and mothered him and fought beside him, and suffered with him.  Ten of those listed are women.  Priscilla,  Phoebe (a deacon!), and Junia, who was imprisoned because of her work in the Lord– were they silent?  Did they not teach men?

You see, it’s confusing.  I can read– i am not uneducated.  And I have entire sermons in my head that are shouting to be preached.  Yet it is so easy to give in, to think, why bother?  Nothing will ever change.  Women will always be second class citizens in the church.  At least in America we do not live in fear of the men throwing acid on us, or shooting us in the head because we are educated.  See how quickly those thoughts close in?

I am not satisfied.

Hey, I read your “rant” and have no “sensible” reply, not that you asked for one. I agree with most of what you wrote, but then, whether I agree or not doesn’t make a lot of difference. You are what makes the difference…..You can write the wisdom down and publish or distribute or ??? There will be answers in it that someone is looking for, or there will be a brace where someone is leaning and falling. As for me, I am going to go south and not ponder much of anything for a week or so…..but, if by chance I do have something profound to say, I will send it to you, post haste…..Phantom…..
